Splitting and Chopping Patterns in RealSteelGuitar

I'm working with the pattern library in Song Mode for RealSteelGuitar and one of the areas that has got me stuck is the ability to split and chop patterns.
Once I have moved a pattern into a song, especially a picking pattern, I can shorten the 'tail' of the pattern so that it can jooin onto a copy of the modiified pattern.. The ability to split the pattern would be great but when I right-click the pattern I do not always see the option to split. But when I do get the option, it doesn't seem to do much. The documentation also mentions the ability to chop the pattern, but I don't ever get that that option.
Could anybody explain how I can get these modes to work please?
