Recording the Midi Generated Pattern Mode

Hi All,
I seem to recall that at one time I wanted to record the patterns output be RealGuitar in Pattern Mode. I am using Ableton Live.
I was able to get this to work as follows:

1. I put the pattern on its own track.
2. Put an instance of RealGuitar on its own track and routed the pattern to this instance.
The RealGuitar setup was used to output both Midi and Audio
3. I set up a new midi track to receive the output from RealGuitar and set this to record.

I've just tried this again but joy at all. I thought I had made notes of this but I can't find them.
Can anyone help please?
