Why is the Real Guitar fret board upside down?

Or have I gone completely mad?

Well, look at it like this. . . .

If you're holding an actual guitar and you look down at the fretboard, this is how the fretboard appears, since you're basically looking at it upside down (head tilted down, guitar tilted up)

It's also the way guitar tablature is represented on paper. . .
