I know Im a complete idiot but I've just spent two hours trying to figure out why my G5 mac can see the MOL ports and so can the PC but no midi data is passing between the two. It turned out that a recent windows security update activated a firewall that had previously beenn turned off.

I merely post this to save someone else wasting an afternoon!
