I'm a bit confused with teh HW requirements of MidiOverLan.
PC: Windows XP SP2, 512 MB RAM. Network Gigabit Ethernet compatible interface(s),
If Midi runs at 31Khz, why the heck would someone need super-expensive Gigabit Ethernet hardware?
MidiOverLan is SUPPOSED to save us money, since we don't need Midi Interfaces (which are dirt cheap) any more.
What's the scoop here. Is Music Lab trying to sell us expensive GigE cards just to run this software ?????????? |

I must admit, their requirements are messy. MINIMUM network states 100mbit/s. And RECOMMENDED states gigabit or wifi.
The funny thing is that any wireless connection is slower than 100mbit/s normal connection. Also, any wireless connection is more unreliable with timing-sensitive data, such as MIDI.
31Khz is totally irrelevant in this case. It might be a frequency which is used when MIDI data runs in MIDI cable. In case of MOL there is no MIDI cable but a network cable.
If you are using decent 100mbit/s network cards, good 100mbit/s switch and quality cabling then 100mbit/s is more than enough for MIDI data. Maybe with a 100 computer setup Gigabit ethernet is needed... |
