This is a copy of my post on the cubase.net forum, but as I used RealStrat for accompaniment (together with Virtual Guitarist 2) and solo playing, I thought it would be welcome on this forum also.
----------------------------------------------------
After about 20 years working for other musicians, I started writing my own songs about 2 years ago.
I had these plans for many years, but never found enough time to do it.
Now I'm in my fourthies, I thought it would be a good time to start...
I uploaded a song, to make it available for your opinions.
the song is called 'Good Day' and was inspired by the death of my brother and best friend, who was 6 years older than me.
He suddenly died because of a brain attack on his 48th birthday (!), on Januari 30, 2006.
With this the song I tried to express the feelings that showed up when my brother was gone, and how I tried to accept it.
It's the first time ever for me to publish a song with my personal vocals. Untill now it was only heard by a few very good friends, who appreciate the song being avarage non-musical-listeners.
So... Now I'd like some opinions about this song from people like song writers and composers.
Didn't have any musical education... Everything is done by ear (half deaf) and feelings. My only experience comes from being sound engineer (many years ago)...
I appreciate any comments about the sound and the mix too. But as I consider all my music still being in the development phase, I'm most of all interested in opinions about the music, vocals and lyrics.
FYI: The vocals are still a try out. Just a temporary recording for the impression...

The song is on a small private FTP-server.

From the lyrics:
"Hoka Hey!", is a famous war cry by the legendary Lakota indian Crazy Horse. It means as much as "It's a good day to die! _________________ RealGuitar, RealStrat, RealLPC

Thanks for the nice comments, but most of all for the bad critics!! I'm sure they'll help me in developing my v-guitar skills! _________________ RealGuitar, RealStrat, RealLPC

Yeah, it's always a disappointment when no one reacts... Maybe you shouldn't have asked 'song writers and composers' to give their opinion, but regular RS users and other normal people.
Anyway, I listened to the song and to me it sounds really good! Love all the little things that are going on all around all the time. Also like those orchestra hits and accents. The song has a nice wide and full sound. I like the athmosphere: it's got a very specific mood. Sounds VERY professional to me. Voices are a bit hidden too much towards the end, but that's all the bad I can say. All in all a pleasure to listen to! Kind of the song you don't mind hearing again, because there is a lot to discover. |

Thank you for spending some time to comment J. ... and I'm glad you like the song!
About the vocal level... I think that's the only "correcting" comment I got.... from a lot of people. So you can be sure I'll give that some extra attention in the final mix!
But, as I wrote on another forum, I used to be a big fan of The Cure and the drowning vocals on their early albums... That may have given me a certain view on vocal mixes _________________ RealGuitar, RealStrat, RealLPC
